Weddings are always a total pleasure and privilege to photograph. When it’s the wedding of a friend, it’s even more special.
I’ve known the Thompson’s now for….a long time. He was in the best band my town ever produced. How big a deal that is depends on what you think of Greenock I guess. It was when I was writing about and photographing that band, in my very early attempts at both of those things, I met them. Nothing makes for shared history like a love of any kind of art, but particularly music, so I was obviously over the moon when they asked me photograph their wedding.
The day was truly beautiful. Even if the weather wasn’t totally on side, this wedding was overflowing with joy from the second I arrived in the morning. Throughout the day, there was nothing to be seen but smiles, laughter and the occasional moment of desperately happy intimacy. Not the grandest affair, but it was one tastefully curated by the couple and it fitted their sincere admiration for each other perfectly.
From the jigsaw’s, transferable tattoos and board games of the post-ceremony mingle to the eclectic and expertly arranged playlist, there wasn’t a single moment of the day that didn’t celebrate Roisin, Gil and their love. It was the perfect reflection of the couple’s character but it also made wonderful use of the venues character and played wonderfully into the character of their guests as well. Ultimately, character is what sets a wedding apart from any other wedding, and this is one I’m sure no one will forget in a hurry.
A lot of folk would be put off a city centre wedding, but there’s a unique blend of escapism and urbanism to a city wedding. I’d recommend it for any couple looking for something a little different, and 29 proved to be perfect hosts providing a wonderful service to guests, suppliers and the couple alike. Also, they’ve an inexplicable, but wonderful, model cow kicking about as well. So that’s pretty good.
People often describe weddings as perfect days without much thought, but all the tender thought that went into this day, into the relationship of Mr & Mrs Thompson, made this day perfect. I’m over the moon I got the chance to document it.
Here’s a few of my favourites from the day.
